2013 Blogathon no.30: I made it #blog2013 #author

Stitch is celebrating for me I managed 30 posts in 30 days!!!! This month I have also almost completed the edit of Obi the Super Puppy and the Quest for the Last Laugh. In reading it to my girls I have decided to rewrite the last three chapters. My aim is to send it off to be edited in August. Looking good for that. I have also celebrated the release of The Homework Goblin and began planning my book launch. Can’t wait for that and there will be more blogs soon. Check out Friday’s post for the invitation if local. I have also submitted and entry to the Super hero Challenge. So much fun creating my characters and writing that flash fiction piece. I will be writing a story soon. What else, I have begun my charms flash fiction piece and continued my edit of my longer story. That is pretty good for a part-time writer… So lots of work still to do, but looking back is great. I realize how much I actually do in a week.

These blog challenges are also great for building a social media platform. I think I now have over 100 followers on this blog, 500 twitter followers and 260 on my author page. Each of my three published books also have a page, so that’s pretty good. I would love to sing out a big thank you to each and every one of you for supporting me. Especially to those who have bought any of my books (check the links to purchase). Another thankyou to the wonderful people who have taken the time to review my work and post that too. I am very proud to say all three of my books have four and five-star reviews! So what’s next… well give me a day or two to get organized and I will let you all know. Until then – have fun!

2013 Blogathon no.29 Super Day #blog2013

It’s winter here and has been freezing. Then today the sun has come out to play… so nice. Yet I should be finishing my reports.

Ah there’s always tomorrow, far too nice right now. Going to spent the afternoon outside developing writing material. Surely those pesky reports will finish themselves… Until tomorrow – have fun!

2013 Blogathon no.28 Book Launch! #blog2013 #childrensbooks

2013 Blogathon no.27 Old dog new tricks #blog2013

My special boy Obi is past the age if ten. He is actually closing in on eleven. So I don’t take him to work with me anymore. He is happier in the back yard. Still doesn’t stop him giving me daggers when I take Stitch for a walk on my days off. Anyway I must admit he still thinks like a puppy. The other day a bottle (empty thankfully) fell out of the car. Obi grabbed it and ran off before I could pick it up. He still chases the kid’s remote control cars (apart from the pony one, he seems to like that) and now he has got back into digging. So I guess you can say my old dog still likes his old tricks… At least he is still providing me with plenty of good story material. Until tomorrow – have fun!Image

2013 Blogathon no.26 Editing Mysteries #blog2013 #amediting

I love to write, not so keen on the editing thing. It is so important and I am getting better at it, but not really enjoying. The problem with editing is you read your work so much you forget all the good bits. I also often read what I want it to say rather than what it actually says. So I have started a new technique. I read my stories out loud to my kids. I am currently doing that with the Sequel to Obi the Super Puppy and the Mystery of the Red Mist. As I was reading last night I realised there is a big chunk missing… So back to the drawing board. In fact I think I need to rewrite the last four chapters. Grrrrrr! Well not exactly grr, because the story will be much better after. It’s just the time to do it. I promised myself a complete edit by the end of June. Now it looks like an edit, but without actually typing. Still it’s progress.

Then while I was going through this I looked at my charms story and realised that needs to be redone. Why? Well simple because I had a better idea. This of course occurred to me in the middle of the night, while I should have been sleeping. So not I need to get that down before I forget.

In short editing remains a mystery to me, but I am learning. Any advice or stories from my fellow authors out there? Until next time – have fun!

2013 Blogathon no.25: Charming #blog2013 #amwriting

My charm has arrived!!! I also have my first draft written for the Crock of Charms project. So it’s go, go, go here. I am also trying to book my holiday to actually take the girls swimming with dolphins. Can’t wait to go. At the moment I just need a holiday, so booking this one will help lift my spirits. I am so pumped for my writing and my kids are doing great. It’s just the other stuff that is annoying. Still not going to focus on it now. As an added bonus I had a breakthrough with my editing of Obi the Super Puppy and the Quest for the Last Laugh! I may actually be ready to submit it for actual editing soon! It’s a charming day to sit and edit a charms story. Off I go…. until tomorrow – have fun!

2013 Blogathon no.24: Stitch Says #blog2013 #interviews #reviews

Today I thought I’d plug my other blog. Well in actual fact it’s a blog for other people, I just run it. My Stitch Says blog is set up for author interviews and reviews. I am happy to help promote other authors. In return I would like people to do the same for me, but that doesn’t always happen. Still check out my interviews and reviews at:

I named this blog after my little man Stitch. Simply because he’s my reading buddy. If I am reading a book Stitch is there. He lies on my feet. I can honestly say he loves it when I am reading a good book because I read for longer and he gets to stay on the bed!

I am opening up my Stitch Says blog for the rest of the year. I have a few spots booked, but there are some available. So if you would like an interview or a review (or both) email me at Ashley@ahowland.org or message me here. Would love to have some other reviews on my three books and interviews or guest posts too. I am also extending this to other bloggers out there. Let’s help each other I will happily post a positive and friendly guest blog on my Stitch Says site. So email me, let’s get busy promoting each other. Just to play a bit of the number game. All my social media are linked. So I reach about 1000 people with one post (obviously that’s across media and some are probably getting a double or triple whammy = special thanks to those!). So email me and let the fun begin.

Just as a note Stitch’s head would not fit in that chair anymore… still my Little Man though! Until tomorrow – have fun!

2013 Blogathon no.23: Sunday Sillies #blog2013 #dogjokes

My brain has frozen, let’s have a laugh!

A guy is driving around Oklahoma and he sees a sign in front of a house: “Talking Dog For Sale.” He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a Labrador retriever sitting there.

“You talk?” he asks.

“Yep,” the Lab replies.

“So, what’s your story?”

The Lab looks up and says, “Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running.”

“But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security wandering near suspicious characters and listening in.”

“I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.”

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

“Ten dollars,” the guy says.

“Ten dollars? This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?”

“Because he’s a dam liar. He never did any of that stuff.”

Until tomorrow – have fun!

2013 Blogathon no. 22: Book Launch Planning #blog2013 #author

Ashley Howland
Yesterday I had a meeting at a local library to organize my book launch for The Homework Goblin.
I am lucky I have two amazing friends helping me organize this event and they set up the meeting. It was incredible. Here is a community library who are happy to give me their children’s space, equipment for the kids to do an activity and an hour of the room for nothing. They are going to advertise in all their local news and media, plus have arranged it to be straight after an event so there are already kids there. Truly wonderful. I am so excited. So all I need to do now is organize some invitations for local schools and teachers (which my friends are helping with). I find the whole published author thing a bit overwhelming. I am not one to talk up my work and I find self promotion really difficult. Any way to sit in a library and get spoken too like a real author was a first for me. Usually I get the “Oh you published a book?” then when they see the books it’s a bit more like “Oh you actually have books published?”

So I am going to do this book launch. I will do a reading and talk about why I wrote the book. I also am able to take my secret weapon… designed to make any child’s day… Yep Stitch is coming!!! He is after all in my author photo, although I can no longer carry him. he’s still beautiful.
Stitch Laughing
So I will be signing and selling all three of my books on the day as well. I also have some prizes for the kids. Any other suggestions? Would love to hear from other authors about their book launches… Until tomorrow – have fun!
