Stitch Says Book Review: The Case of the Stolen Plott Hounds #bookreview

Hi it’s Stitch

Chewie and I have been busy during the heat of summer. We’ve been reading and eating icecream!!!! Anyway today I have a great book review for you – it’s a dog book YAY!!!! Check it out…

The Adventures of Quinn Higgins Boy Detective
The Case of the Stolen Plott Hounds
By Douglas Quinn

I really enjoyed this book and know that it will appeal to boys. Girls will love it too, but as the story revolves around a group of boys it’s great for engaging boys in reading. Quinn follows a stray dog and it leads him to discover new friends and a whole new adventure. Each of the boys have their own story and personality. This book covers a lot – autism, race and the overriding fact that the boys like each other unconditionally. It’s an excellent subplot hidden behind the mystery of the stolen dog. Young readers will appreciate the mystery and the author has created lots of discussion points. Overall I recommend this book to anyone who wants to engage young readers in thinking about books. They will relate to the characters and love the story line.

Stitch Says Book Review: Too Many Pirates #awesomebook

Hi, it’s Stitch,

I am starting my year of reviews on a really high note – a five woofer!!!

Check out this fantastic read:

Too Many Pirates
The Adventures of Summer McPhee of Ocracoke Island
By Douglas Quinn

I absolutely loved this book, it is perfect for children aged 7-9. Summer McPhee and her friends like to solve mysteries and this one involves a burglary after a pirate festival. Can they find a criminal dressed up as a pirate, when everyone was dressed as pirates? It is a whole lot of fun. The characters are perfectly written as curious kids and the story line moves along at a nice pace. This is the second book from this series I have read and I recommend both of them. The great thing about this book is there is more between the lines, lessons all children learn appear along the way. Children will relate to Summer and her friends. That all adds to the fantastic read.

Solstice and Baby Snooks are woken up by Q-Tip the cat to be led on a rescue mission. A baby bird is lost in the forest. They need to find, it and rescue it before the other forest animals. The Determined Beagle is exactly that, she never gives up. Just like the rest of the series Saving Sparky is cute, well written and has beautiful illustrations. It is a perfect little book for little readers.

Stitch Says Book Review: Shadowzone #greatbook

Hi it’s Stitch here

I know It’s been a while, I’ve been sheltering from the rain and the cold. However spring is here, in theory and t’s time to start reading in the sunshine again. Today I have a great book for you:

Shadowzone By Simon Rose

Charlie and Ben live in different worlds. Charlie’s is condemned to doomsday after an asteroid destroyed the environment. Ben’s is their target. During a storm they see flashes of each other’s world and fall into a dangerous adventure. They discover that Ben is the key to a takeover plot, where the leaders of Charlie’s worlds will destroy everyone on Ben’s then move over.
Shadowzone is the first book in a series and I guarantee you will be racing towards the second. The characters are intriguing, but even more interesting is the plot. The idea of an environmental catastrophe being the turning point in the existence of two parallel worlds draws in the reader. As Charlie and Ben sink deeper into the plot, the reader will delve deeper into their world.
An excellent read!

Guinevere and Cedwyn vow to rescue the children, but a miscalculation puts them all in more danger. The plan quickly unravels, and Guinevere’s impassioned decisions come crashing down as Cedwyn chooses to turn his dream of becoming a knight into reality. Will their courage be strong enough to survive, or will one make the ultimate sacrifice?

5-Star Review from Readers’ Favorite
Reviewed By Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers’ Favorite

Children are attracted to adventure and they don’t see the risks that adults do, refusing to accept many of the limitations and rules enforced for the sole purpose of keeping children safe. Guinevere and Cedwyn are close friends and Cedwyn, although still very young, has pledged his life to protect the princess who will one day be his queen when she marries King Arthur. Being children, they have their adventures. And one such adventure to the mysterious standing stones results in magical visions and then a race for their lives. There are people intent on kidnapping Guinevere. When she out-foxes their intentions, they take the castle children instead to be sold into slavery. Guinevere insists on chasing after the kidnappers and rescuing the children. The adventure intensifies as they risk their lives and become heroes. But are they totally successful in rescuing the children? Or do they just manage to create more problems in the process.

Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend is the sequel to Cheryl Carpinello’s first Guinevere story, Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend. Both books take the fascinating Arthurian legends and create stories that will entice even the most reluctant of readers. With realistic characters and an exciting plot full of adventure, the reader will be pulled along to an unexpected conclusion, one that demands another book to complete the series. Young readers will certainly easily associate with Guinevere and Cedwyn, who, at their young age, take risks and disobey their parents, while at the same time they reach out to help others and become heroes. A great way to entice readers, even reluctant ones, to follow the adventures found in legends.

Book One – Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend

Picture

At the dawn of Camelot, one young girl is about to take her place beside the greatest king in England’s history…. She is a mere child of twelve. But in these medieval days, this is the age when childish things must be put away and greater responsibilities accepted—all in preparation for a betrothal of marriage. For young Lady Guinevere, on the advent of her thirteenth Birth Day, the whole idea is quite unbearable. After all, what could be better than spending her youth playing with her best friend Cedwyn, roaming the grounds around the castle looking for mythical creatures or hunting rabbits? However, the wizard Merlyn—her teacher and friend—knows that destiny has a way of catching up with a person. His arrival sets in motion a series of events that will lead Guinevere to her destiny whether she is ready for it or not.

Stitch Says:

Children can get hooked into the stories of Guinevere and Sir Arthur, even if they are not history buffs. Historical Fiction is a great way to spark an interest and Cheryl Carpinello does this genre really well. This book is no exception. Princess Guinevere is ruled by her heart. When Guinevere and her best friend Cedwyn disobey orders and sneak out of the castle they think they are heading for some fun. Instead they find themselves in the middle of a dangerous journey that will make them take on new roles. Children will enjoy reading about these two likeable characters. They will relate to their flaws and their friendship.
Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend is a great book to encourage children to read and to take an interest in historical figures.

Stitch has been busy this week. Here is his character interview with nine-year old Tara, or Sweet T as her family sometimes calls her. T tells us about her role in Sweet T and the Turtle Team and summer adventures on Gull Island, North Carolina

“Hey, Sweet T!” as they say in Carolina. Welcome to my blog!

Super-excited to be here with you and on the Beach Bound Books tour! Cat says, “Hey!” back, and I am not to embarrass her. (Oops! Not supposed to say that last part.)

What brings you to Gull Island from your home in Kelly Lake?

I’m staying with Great-aunt Mae Gray and little sister Jenna at Gray Cottage while Mama works at Gull Island Aquarium for the summer. It’s fun at the beach, but I miss Daddy and Kristen. They’re home in Kelly Lake because Kristen is at computer camp, and daddy is teaching summer school.

Are you making new friends on Gull island?

I’m trying, but it’s hard. Island kids are nice but they aren’t used to my city ways. Aunt Mae’s neighbor, Billy, can be nice one minute and grumpy the next. I can’t figure him out. I invited him to join my turtle team, but he said “No!” and stomped off. I asked Aunt Mae if she knew why, but she says it’s Billy’s secret to tell. I still want to be his friend, no matter what.

Tell us about your favorite moment in the story.
OOOooo. I know EXACTLY! When baby sea turtles hatch!

They are so cute! A gazillion pop out of their nest and swish across the sand to the ocean.

Turtle teams watch over the babies to make sure they don’t become dinner for sand crabs and seagulls. Our artist, Irene A. Jahns, painted us THE most beautiful picture of a hatch. Cat calls it “shimmery watercolors to dazzle the eye.”

You and sister Kristen exchange nightly text messages to stay in touch because Kristen’s far away in Kelly Lake with your father. Are your parents ok with the two of you texting?
Oh, yes! Mama and Daddy let us borrow their tablets for 30 minutes each night. Mama says it helps Kristen practice what she learns during computer camp. And I like learning texting, too. HaHaHa – Daddy says we still must know how to spell correctly -:>

Were you scared in the chapter about the tropical storm?
Well, tbh (that’s texting language for to be honest – Cat has a texting glossary in our book to help you learn the shortcuts!) we were all nervous when Cat first told us she was going to put us in an ocean storm. But she explained she’d lived through hurricanes and tropical storms as a girl in New England and then as a big person in North Carolina. She wasn’t going to make it a scary storm. Just enough bad weather to stir up adventure for us and let readers experience what it’s like to be in a summertime beach storm. Hint: lots of wind, thunder, and high surf!

What other books are you in?
Cat writes chapter books for young readers and older kids, who are smart but have a hard time with reading. She wrote my whole family and me into her first two books, Sweet T and the North Wind and Finding Fuzzy. (Oh, and you don’t have to read our books in order. We tell a complete story in each tale.)

Cat also wrote an e-book for i-Books and Kindle, The Magical Aquarium. Even though I’m not in it, it’s a really cool story for young readers about ocean creatures. UK artist Corrina Holyoake created the centerpiece illustration that shows … OOPS! … Can’t tell you what it is because I’ll give away the aquarium’s secret. But kids will love it when they find out and see her drawing!

I hope Cat writes another Sweet T Tale and keeps me in it. Maybe a return to Gull Island!?!

Thanks for joining us today, Sweet T. All the best to you and your new book, Sweet T and the Turtle Team.
Awww, thanks. It’s fun meeting you and your readers. Cat says y’all are THE best. She’s so right! We hope you’ll visit us on Gull Island soon. Sweet tea and Aunt Mae’s triple-fudge, peanut-butter pie are waiting for you at Gray Cottage. Happy tales!

Now it’s time for Stitch’s review:

Nine year old Tara may be having trouble making friends on the island, but she is determined to help the hatchlings get to the water safely. Being part of the turtle team leads her to find out more about the other kids on the island. It all seems to be going well, when a storm hits. Will Tara and her team be able to save the hatchlings?
Sweet T and the Turtle Team is a delightful book for animal lovers. The characters are interesting and there is great information about sea turtles too. The language is simple and the storyline is easy to follow. A great read for children aged 6 to 11.

Stitch Says gives it 4 woofs.

Keep reading, keep writing.

Stitch Says Book Review: Chase Tinker and the House of Mist #magicbook

Hi, it’s Stitch…

I have been very busy, running, eating, sleeping and oh yeah reading. Today I have an awesome review for you. It’s the last in a series. Check it out:

Chase Tinker and the House of Mist (The Chase Tinker Series, Book 4)

vector illustration of an eerie halloween night background with a full moon

by Malia Ann Haberman

The final book in the Chase Tinker is another story packed full of magical adventure. It is non-stop action as Chase takes on his role of Keeper of the house. He has to lead his family in a rescue mission. First he needs to return his mother, then it’s time to restore the relic and finally destroy the Marlowes. It is a fantastic end to a wonderful series that middle grade children will enjoy.
Once again the characters are endearing as they continue to grow. It’s the conclusion you need to read. The whole series is a must for all magic lovers.
