Completed Draft #celebrate #ChaBooCha

I have completed my draft…

Always a good feeling to know you have achieved what you set out to do. I even have a few days left to complete the other goals I had for the month. I am particularly happy to have achieved this year’s challenge because I have had so much other stuff going on. Writing has been a great escape for me. I have only managed a few nights a week, but that has really helped me to relax and unwind.

That is one of the great things about the Chapter Book Challenge. I find while it’s a busy time of the year it is also a great way to get back into a routine and find time to write. That’s half the battle, actually finding time to write. I certainly have lots of work to do now for the rest of the year, but finishing a draft gives me the motivation to keep going.

Would love to hear how other people are going…

Have fun!

Chapter Book Challenge Week 2 Update #ChaBooCha

Wow week two went in a flash…

It’s been a bit of a crazy week full of distractions. I have been working on my holiday photos, stating new projects around the house (cause I have nothing else to do…) and trying to get to the gym. No excuses, just life. Things get in the way of writing, sometimes writing gets in the way of things. Not at the moment though. That does not mean I haven’t done anything. I have actually written 6 chapters. Over half way there!!!!

Author Ashley Howland

I am not unhappy with my progress, true there are many other little writing jobs I had hoped to have finished by now. It’s always the way. Still to look forward to the rest of the month – it’s not quite half way, so really I am ahead.

What goals am I setting for this week:
1. Complete the rest of my book – well okay, if I can get a rough draft of chapters 7,8,9 and 10 I will have done well.
2. Complete the formatting of book one – then it’s just the illustrating to work on.
3. Sort my holiday photos for printing – not writing related really, but it does inspire me to write.
4. Edit my flash fiction piece for publishing later this year.

Four goals – four days until the weekend. Will see where I am then… What about you any goals???

Have fun!

Week One of the Chapter Book Challenge #ChaBooCha

We are closing in on the end of week one in the Chapter Book Challenge…

I’m going along okay at the moment. I have written four chapters of the fifth book in my super hero series. I’m sure there will need to be lots of major editing, but I am happy that the story is starting to flow. It’s fun to get back into writing about these characters. Of course this makes me more determined to get books one and two published this year. I have begun formatting book one and now of course I need to do my final edit and illustrate. So miles to go!

This week I have also started to edit a flash fiction piece that will be published later in the year. I’m pretty excited about this one too, it’s going to lead to another, longer chapter book. I have started some of the planning process here too.

I have also begun working on some writing workshops that I will be delivering soon. This is exciting to have a partnership with a library and a chance to sell some of my books too! I am keen to get this program up and running.

Right, so I am on track. I have enjoyed reading how other people are going too. How far along are you? It’s never too late to jump in and start… so get writing and have fun!

Goals for the Month #ChaBooCha #amwriting

Right so it’s the first of March, but as the challenge is run from the other side of the world I have an extra day to get organised… Yay for down under!!!

That gives me a chance to really prioritize my goals for the month. Here they are:

1. Write book number 5 in my super hero series – I wrote 1, 2, 3 in 2015 during this challenge and number 4 not long after. 1 and 2 are almost ready to publish, 3 and 4 need to be edited one more time before sending to my editor… So book number 5 really needs to be drafted. I have lots of ideas for this series, time to get them into order

2. I recently drafted a flash fiction piece to be published later this year. It was about Stitch and Chewie! Now I need to expand on that idea and get this down. It is really starting to buzz my brain. I think this one will be a longer chapter book, so may take me more than a month….

3. I have been playing with a series of stories for my girls and sort of have a first one drafted. It is so rough that it really is just noted. I am going to use this month to get this series going again too…

They are a lot bigger now, but the stories need to be written.

There we are three goals to work on during this month. These are purely my writing goals. I also have some illustration and editing goals. More about them later.

Yes I am setting my sites high, I always do because there is something about this challenge that makes me write. It must be the company shared during this time…

Are you taking part? What are your goals?

Most importantly – have fun!

Chapter Book Challenge Time #ChaBooCha

Wow it’s almost march and that means it is time to write….

I love this challenge, not only has it enabled me to be highly productive, I have connected with some fantastic authors. It is one of the best groups I have ever joined. These connections are excellent for advice, motivation and just to share a laugh. I have also had the chance to interview a few other members, review their books and help promote their work too. It is so much more than just a writing group.

During this challenge I have often drafted multiple chapter books and am aiming to do so again this year. To date I have published one book that I wrote during this time. It is the sequel to my Obi the Super Puppy story…

I am proud to have completed the whole writing and publishing process with one of my Chapter Book Challenge stories and am working on publishing two more this year. I just need to get some illustrations done and the final editing. Oh and work on the cover, format and actually publish….Alright so still a lot of work to do, but watch this space because they will be published this year! For now I need to get back to my one note and organise myself ready for the march onslaught of writing. Wish me luck!!!!

Been Writing, At Last #finally #lovetowrite

I have completely neglected my blog, but I have good reason. I have actually written something. That’s pretty exciting, because lately I have just been coming up with ideas, but nothing has flown. Then I had a hot bath… think that one came from Harry Potter. Take a bath, that will give you the clue. Well in this case I didn’t need a golden egg, but the bath did do the trick. An idea came too me and for once I got it down straight away.

Tonight I read the draft to my critics… I mean children. They loved it, so there is tick number one. It does need some polishing of course, but when I read it out loud I did realise something. It’s actually pretty good. I will be submitting it in a month or two for an anthology. Which is pretty exciting. I am looking forward to posting more about that later.

This draft has done something else for me. It has reenergised my writing. Just in time too. It is almost March, which means Chapter Book Challenge time!

I love this challenge. I have even now published one of the books I wrote a few challenges ago.

I am aiming to publish two more books written during this challenge later in the year. More about that later too. So much exciting stuff happening. I have lots to do and lots to share. For now though I am just happy that my Chewie story got the kid’s seal of approval and I can keep working on it!

What are you working on at the moment? Have fun!

One Goal Achieved #ChaBooChaLite

I have completed one of my goals for the September Chapter Book Challenge Lite….

I completed the draft of my pirate book. That means I have actually drafted my whole pirate trilogy at last. It has taken a while and still needs lots of work, but it is done!

Now I have a few days to get my other goals completed…. Lots to do, but writing the draft has got me motivated and back in the swing.

These challenges are so great, they really back you focus on writing. I need that every now and then, just to get my head back in the right frame. Now I feel energised to keep going and the ideas are moving again.

To any writer out there I recommend becoming an active part of groups like the Chapter Book Challenge, simply because it gets you moving. It also gives you a great network of writers to ask advice, discuss writing and just share ideas. These networks make the hard parts of writing easier and help you celebrate your success!

So check out the Chapter Book Challenge today and get writing – have fun!

Keep the Writing Flowing #inthegroove #ChaBooChaLite

I haven’t been posting much lately, but the good news is I have been writing! I am into chapter nine of ten in my chapter book! Yay pirates are alive and the words are flowing. I love that feeling. The story buzzing in by brain and itching to get down on the keyboard. There is only one better feeling – that’s actually holding your book!!!!

Of course it’s a first draft so long way to go before I am holding my book. That will never happen if I don’t finish the first draft though. It’s all part of the journey, but I love this part. Love it so much that I am getting back to it right now – hoping to have it completed tonight…. Wish me luck!

Have Fun!

Spring brings new ideas #getmotivated #ChaBooChaLite

Wow the first week of spring is over and I’m only just starting my September writing projects. I am so far behind, but it’s just a crazy time of year. It looks like I wasn’t the only one making a slow start either. The Chapter Book Challenge Lite has made a late start, but the timing couldn’t be better. I need a challenge now to get myself motivated.

First let’s re visit my goals for August…
I did manage to submit two fairy tales, a little late, but I got them in. Yay!
I completed all of my reviews, although I have a few books to read at the moment. This is a challenge in itself, but I will get there.

So I did achieve something. It’s funny how you can feel like you are doing nothing, but when you look back it’s a different story.
This year I have published two of my own books, an Anthology written by the students at my school and submitted four short stories to be published in three anthologies. I have also drafted a new book and am about to get the dust of some of my older manuscripts.
All in all that’s not bad, considering I am working full time, have two kids who do a multitude of sports, go to the gym, walk the dogs and am planning a humongous holiday at the end of the year. The year is not over yet, I still have goals to reach. So here is my plan for September (even given the late start:
1. Complete the third story in my pirate trilogy
2. Send my third and fourth Super Heroes books off to the editor – one last edit first
3. Sort the Illustrations for Books one and two in my Super heroes series
4. Plot book five and plot another series I have been playing with
5. Draft the second Not So Boring Book

Lots to do, so I better get started…. What are your plans? Have fun!
