July – Winter Writing Time #getwriting

I am not really a fan of winter, yes it does indeed get cold here in Australia. We live in denial, but every year winter comes. We get freezing mornings, winds and rain. We still stand on the side of sports pitches, but it is really cold.

Although I am often freezing at work in the gym (there is a limit to how much running helps), I have found a great thing about winter. It is the best time to settle under the covers and write. That being said at the moment I am editing and formatting. Either way it keeps the brain working and that helps to warm the whole body.

I am hoping to have some big news by the end of this month, so watch this space.

My goals for winter – to complete a whole host of unfinished writing tasks. That’s the best place for me to start right now. I have so many projects on the go, I just need to start ticking off the list. I often think the middle of the year is a good time for that. You can revisit your goals and see where you are.

Right now I am going to see if I can tick off a few of those boxes…

Stitch has been busy reading too – remember to check in with Stitch Says and Chewie’s News. If you are an author who would like and interview or review remember to email me at ashley@ahowland.org

More soon – have fun!

Illustrating #wishIcoulddraw #writinglife

I’ve hit a stumbling block in publishing my next book…It needs black and white illustrations. I know I could go without, but I really want by book to be perfect. The problem is, well I can’t draw. Okay so I don’t belive in the work can’t, but I don’t find drawing a natural ability. I have to be more creative.

I guess it is like anything, practice makes perfect. Not that I ever expect my illustrations to be perfect. I am investigating a few options at the moment, but I am also trying to get one picture per chapter that I am really happy with.

This is a challenge that I have overcome before and am determined to work out this time too. The issue is I have five stories in this series and another series that will need similar formatting. That means a lot of drawing and it all takes time. I am the patient with my writing, but I also want to get my books out there. I better get back to it…

Have fun!

Getting Inspiration – Writing Buddies #writingworkshop

This weekend I am running a workshop with my two writing buddies:

It’s an interactive session that is all about getting inspired to write. We are going to have lots of fun. Stitch and Chewie are looking forward to working with everyone. They love to help me write and are great at inspiring others. I won’t give any more away now. Check out the session at the Cove Library in Adelaide on Sunday the 4th of June 1:30 – 3:00pm. Would love to see you all there. If you can’t come I will be posting some information after the session. In the meantime here is a photo to get your creative ideas going:

See you all there, have fun!

May the Fourth Be With You #starwarsappreciation #hastobedone

I know it’s quirky, but I have to admit to being a Star Wars fan. I’m not fanatical about it, but I do love a good story and let’s face it Star Wars is a good story.

On our big trip to Walt Disney World we had some awesome Star Wars moments. The girls got to fight Darth Vader during the Jedi Academy. He even said my little one was strong in the force.. he’s right there. We met Chewbacca and he is one massive wookie! We watched the incredible fireworks and of course the first order marching down the street. It was certainly an amazing experience.

May the Force be with you – and of course may it lead you to writing and reading awesome stories…

Have fun!

May Blues #itscoldoutside #timetowrite

May has arrived with rain and cold weather. There is nothing better than cold, wet nights to get the writing flowing. Well that’s my theory anyway. As long as the brain doesn’t freeze it’s probably sound…

I still have a lot of goals from previous months to complete. Who am I kidding, I have a lot from previous years to complete. The trick is to always keep moving forwards and keep the goals in sight. They just take longer sometimes.

That’s all part of the fun.

I have achieved something this month already… I submitted a flash fiction piece staring these two amazing characters,
STITCH

The first cuddle

CHEWIE
When he was sweet

I’m pretty excited about that for sure. I love being a part of anthologies, it makes writing a team sport. As sport is one of my other loves it’s great to combine them all. I haven’t just been writing though. I’m also in design and formatting mode. Which is a bit like trying to play soccer against an octopus. Certainly a challenge. Hopefully I will have some big news by the end of the month… We’ll see…

In the mean time – have fun!

Catching Up #toomuchtodo #gettingbackontrack

Ooops, I have been neglecting my blog. I do have good reasons. I have been really busy. Here’s the update on what I have been working on:
1. I completed the chapter book challenge – writing a ten chapter draft to go along with my super hero series. This is very raw and will of course have lots of work to do, but it’s done and that is great.

2. Reading books to review – I have just completed one book and have started another. My Stitch Says blog is back up and busy again. I love helping other authors promote their work, but it is time consuming. I have to be careful how many I take on at once. However I am open for more so email me if you would like a review or interview.

3. I ran a Book Busters Session at the local library – this was hopefully the first of many sessions at the library. There were a dozen kids who love to write. We had a chat and did a few activities. They were really keen to write. I love working with young people on writing and am looking forward to the next session.

4. It’s almost Easter and I have lots to get organised. If you are looking for some last minute ideas, you can always grab a book:

Way better than chocolate.. well okay, a book and some chocolate would be prefect.

I had lots of other plans for the month of March too, but life got in the way. Just like this blog there are always things that need to be done. I have some great ideas for April and school holidays. Hopefully I will get them completed. Wish me luck – have fun!

Been Writing, At Last #finally #lovetowrite

I have completely neglected my blog, but I have good reason. I have actually written something. That’s pretty exciting, because lately I have just been coming up with ideas, but nothing has flown. Then I had a hot bath… think that one came from Harry Potter. Take a bath, that will give you the clue. Well in this case I didn’t need a golden egg, but the bath did do the trick. An idea came too me and for once I got it down straight away.

Tonight I read the draft to my critics… I mean children. They loved it, so there is tick number one. It does need some polishing of course, but when I read it out loud I did realise something. It’s actually pretty good. I will be submitting it in a month or two for an anthology. Which is pretty exciting. I am looking forward to posting more about that later.

This draft has done something else for me. It has reenergised my writing. Just in time too. It is almost March, which means Chapter Book Challenge time!

I love this challenge. I have even now published one of the books I wrote a few challenges ago.

I am aiming to publish two more books written during this challenge later in the year. More about that later too. So much exciting stuff happening. I have lots to do and lots to share. For now though I am just happy that my Chewie story got the kid’s seal of approval and I can keep working on it!

What are you working on at the moment? Have fun!
