Finally back into Writing #abouttime #neededinspiration

It feels like so long since I have actually written. It’s probably not too long if I really think about it. I wrote a chapter book draft in March and since then have submitted a flash fiction piece that will be published in the next few weeks. I have also published a book and have the second one close to ready. I haven’t been idle, but it feels like a while since I have actually sat down and typed up a draft. Why has it taken me so long???

Well of course I have been busy. I have also found great ways to distract myself. I have coloured…

Completed Jig Saw puzzles…

Made cakes…

In other words I have found many creative ways to distract myself. Which is dangerous leading into Christmas, where I find many sparkly things to make and do. Anyway recently I have felt the need to write and luckily for me I found the perfect source if inspiration…

This beautiful boy. We saw him a few weeks ago and he was struggling. He hadn’t eaten much and wasn’t getting the medications he needed. However at Boo at the zoo he looked much better and was moving more freely. He loved his pumpkin treat and ate his tasty surprise. He’s still struggling a bit, but it was great to see he had improved. He reminded me so much of my first writing inspiration – Obi!!!!

He loved his pumpkin too. So I guess that is all it takes, just one beautiful old animal to get the writing juices flowing once again. I have actually drafted a chapter and the story is starting to form in my mind. Hopefully O get all my November goals complete, but either way it’s just great to be writing again!

Have fun!

Writing Challenges #getmotivated #backontrack

Writing challenges are a great way to get yourself motivated to write. Unfortunately this year I missed the September Chapter Book Challenge Lite. Life got in the way, that’s not an excuse, but a fact. Working full-time, with two kids and dogs makes life busy. Unfortunately something had to give and this time it was writing.

It’s a shame because I feel like I have missed something. that just makes me more motivated to get back into it. I haven’t been completely idle. I have just released the first in my super hero series and am working towards publishing the second. I will also have a short story published soon too. So not idle, but just not as productive as I would like to have been. Still there is time this year. November is a traditional writing challenge month. However I am not going to go for the 50 000 words in a month. I do have goals though:

1. Write a chapter book 10 000 words
2. Complete my ebook 10 000 words
3. Get my second super hero book ready to publish

That sounds like a pretty good aim for the month of November. I have a week to work out the details and get my life organised so I can find the time to actually write.

Wish me luck – have fun!

Finally getting a move on #amwriting

I have some news… I am finally getting closer with my next book!!!!

Definitely almost time to celebrate. Of course when I went to upload the text tonight I noticed an issue, but still only one thing to fix. The cover is coming along too, which is really exciting. Once this is up it should be a quick process to ordering the print proof and then releasing my book!!!

I am excited because tonight I have also started formatting book 2, which I want out for Christmas. I might just make it!

You never know!
I have been feeling really bogged under of late, so the recent turn of events has me motivated once again. Just in time too because September is approaching and I would really like to challenge myself to write a chapter book draft then. This means I really need the bulk of work on these two books completed.

I have so much to do and at least four projects on the go at the moment. The story of my life really…

My to do list gets longer everyday. It’s good to be busy, but we are in the second half of the year and I really need to complete jobs. That is my aim for the rest of the year. Wish me luck – have fun!

July has gone #timetogetmoving

Wow, July went in a rush. It happens when there is school holidays, two weeks tend to flash by with activities for the kids. It makes it difficult to get moving with writing. That didn’t mean I sat there idle. I have actually progressed with my publishing. My book is almost formatted correctly and the images are close to being correct. I am hopeful to upload my story by the end of the week. The cover is also coming along. We have the right photo, but not the actual cover yet. Again really hopeful I will be ordering the print proof by the next weekend….

I am probably a month behind where I want to be. The issue is when it comes to the cover and the illustrations I rely on another person. So things don’t happen when I want them too. I really wish I could actually do these things myself. That would make life easy, but at this stage I don’t have the time to learn. So I wait. It will get there. I was just hoping the second book would be out before Christmas. This one probably won’t take quite as long because I am already collating the illustrations and the cover format will be similar. I may get there in the end.

Change that to I will publish my books!!!

Back to work, lots to do. Have fun!

July – Winter Writing Time #getwriting

I am not really a fan of winter, yes it does indeed get cold here in Australia. We live in denial, but every year winter comes. We get freezing mornings, winds and rain. We still stand on the side of sports pitches, but it is really cold.

Although I am often freezing at work in the gym (there is a limit to how much running helps), I have found a great thing about winter. It is the best time to settle under the covers and write. That being said at the moment I am editing and formatting. Either way it keeps the brain working and that helps to warm the whole body.

I am hoping to have some big news by the end of this month, so watch this space.

My goals for winter – to complete a whole host of unfinished writing tasks. That’s the best place for me to start right now. I have so many projects on the go, I just need to start ticking off the list. I often think the middle of the year is a good time for that. You can revisit your goals and see where you are.

Right now I am going to see if I can tick off a few of those boxes…

Stitch has been busy reading too – remember to check in with Stitch Says and Chewie’s News. If you are an author who would like and interview or review remember to email me at ashley@ahowland.org

More soon – have fun!

Illustrating #wishIcoulddraw #writinglife

I’ve hit a stumbling block in publishing my next book…It needs black and white illustrations. I know I could go without, but I really want by book to be perfect. The problem is, well I can’t draw. Okay so I don’t belive in the work can’t, but I don’t find drawing a natural ability. I have to be more creative.

I guess it is like anything, practice makes perfect. Not that I ever expect my illustrations to be perfect. I am investigating a few options at the moment, but I am also trying to get one picture per chapter that I am really happy with.

This is a challenge that I have overcome before and am determined to work out this time too. The issue is I have five stories in this series and another series that will need similar formatting. That means a lot of drawing and it all takes time. I am the patient with my writing, but I also want to get my books out there. I better get back to it…

Have fun!
